Plantar Fasciitis

Description

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis causes stabbing pain in the bottom of the heel. The plantar fascia is a thick, weblike ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot and is designed to act as a shock absorber, supporting the arch of your foot, and helping you walk.

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common orthopedic complaints. The wear and tear these ligaments experience on a daily basis is the root cause. Excessive pressure on your feet can damage or tear the ligaments causing the plantar fascia to become inflamed which then causes heel pain and stiffness.

In most cases, those with plantar fasciitis complain of pain at the bottom of the heel or sometimes at the bottom mid-foot area. Typically just one foot is affected however it may affect both feet.

Pain develops gradually over time and may range from dull to sharp. For example, a person may feel a burning or ache on the bottom of the foot extending outward from the heel.

Pain is usually worse in the morning during the first few steps of the day, or if you’ve been sitting for a period of time. Climbing stairs can be challenging due to stiffness in the heel.

Increased irritation or inflammation may occur after prolonged activity.

How can Massage Therapy treat plantar fasciitis?

Massage therapy can help to break down scar tissue, improve blood flow and concurrently improve lymphatic circulation, which helps to remove the waste tissue efficiently. Clinical studies have shown that massage therapy for plantar fasciitis significantly improved mobility while reducing pain at the same time.

At Urban Massage, our Registered Massage Therapists may use a combination of deep-tissue massage and encourage a proper stretching routine to assist you on the road to wellness. We encourage you to book an appointment right away as this condition will worsen if left untreated.
