Tendonitis

Description

What is Tendonitis (aka Tendinitis)?

Tendinitis (or tendonitis) is an inflammation or irritation of a tendon. Tendons are pieces of connective tissue between muscles and bones. Tendonitis can be either acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term) in nature.

Tendonitis can affect anyone, however, it's more common in those who do repetitive activities such as:

Gardening/landscaping
Woodworking
Shoveling
Painting
Scrubbing
Tennis, golf, skiing, baseball (throwing/pitching)

Tendonitis can occur in almost any area of the body where a tendon connects a bone to a muscle such as:

The base of the thumb
Elbow
Shoulder
Hip
Knee
Achilles tendon

How can Massage Therapy help treat Tendonitis?

Typically rest from the repetitive activity that caused the tendonitis is recommended along with applying cold (ice) as well as anti-inflammatory medications. In more recent years, massage therapy has become a popular mode of treatment for tendonitis because massage targets and works the injured tendon fibres and surrounding muscle tissue. This results in a loosening of the muscles and at the same time boosts blood circulation and healthy collagen in and around the affected area.
