Achille's Tendonitis

Description

What is Achilles Tendonitis?

The tendon that connects the back of your leg to the heel is called the Achilles tendon. When this tendon begins to swell and cause pain near the bottom of the foot is called Achilles tendonitis.

From a body mechanics perspective, the 2 large muscles in the calf are designed to create the power necessary to ‘push off’ with the foot or stand on your toes. The Achilles tendon connects these muscles to the heel thus allowing your foot to go down. This large tendon gets used while walking, running, or jumping.

Achilles tendonitis usually occurs with overuse and this is quite common in younger people as they typically are more active. For middle-aged and older adults, Achilles tendonitis is commonly connected to arthritis.

What are the symptoms of Achilles Tendonitis?

Pain in the heel and along the length of the tendon when walking or running
Pain and stiffness in the area in the morning
Pain in the Achilles tendon when touched or moved
Swelling and warmth in the heel or along the tendon
Difficulty standing up on one toe

How Massage Therapy Can Help Treat Achilles Tendonitis

Surrounding injured tendons are muscle groups and these often will experience residual stiffness when tendonitis occurs. In the case of Achilles tendonitis, the 2 large calf muscles (the gastrocnemius and soleus) are affected. When these muscles become tight it results in a range of motion reduction and the added stress can compound the pain already occurring from the tendonitis.

A gentle massage brings blood flow to these muscle groups which is an important factor in healing and can improve the movement of the muscles surrounding the Achilles tendon. This in turn can reduce the pain and assist in the healing process of the tendon itself.
