A Not-for-Profit Recreational Hub
As a not-for-profit recreational/banquet facility, our mission at St. Albert Curling Club is clear: create a fantastic atmosphere for our 900 members to curl and host memorable events for companies or families in our beautiful upstairs banquet room. Meet our dedicated team, including the Manager, Assistant Manager, Head Ice Technician, Assistant Icemakers, and Bartenders. We proudly collaborate with "Mama M's Catering," our official caterer, to elevate your dining experience.
Governed by an elected Board of Directors, our 12 volunteers work tirelessly to maintain our status as one of the premier curling facilities in the province. We salute the many volunteers who have been the backbone of our club since its inception in 1949.
Early History
In 1949, St. Albert saw its first curling rink built downtown next to the skating rink. This two-sheet natural ice rink, assembled by dedicated volunteers, marked the birth of curling in St. Albert. Over the years, the club faced financial challenges but persevered, thanks to the efforts of individuals like Ron Harvey, Fred Laird, and Bill Penrose.
The Next Phase
The club evolved in 1959 with a new six-sheet artificial ice rink on Tache Street. Over the years, additional renovations and upgrades followed, including the construction of 'The Friendly Giant Lounge' in 1969. The club saw a triple threat in 1974, celebrating three provincial champions. Major reconstructions in 1997, 2005, and 2010, with funding from various sources, enhanced the club's facilities.
The Grand Opening of the revamped facility in 2011 marked a new era, showcasing the Wall of Fame with luminaries like Hec Gervais, Don McKenzie, Scott Pfeiffer, Marc Kennedy, Cathy King, and Jackie Rae (Anderson) Greening. Honourary Life Members have played crucial roles, including Armand Donais, Casey Anderson, Hector Gervais, and others.
Looking to the Future
As we reflect on our rich history, the St. Albert Curling Club remains dedicated to the future of the sport. Enthusiasm, camaraderie, and a commitment to growth define us. Our strong focus ensures that this Club continues to be a hub for the best in curling, built and operated by passionate individuals who shape the legacy of this cherished sport. Join us in the thrilling journey ahead!
