In the USA, April 20th has been set aside as the annual National Day to recognize Death Doulas and the positive impact they can bring to the end of life process for both the dying person and their family. It also provides the Death Doulas with an opportunity to use this National Day to bring about awareness of the role and to educate their communities of the benefits.
Death Doulas from around the globe embrace and unofficially claim April 20th as their National Day too because we are a close knit global community who come together daily to collaborate, in support of one another and to share opportunities of further education.
What is a Death Doula?
A Death Doula is a non-medical professional that provides holistic support for the dying and their loved ones before, during, and after death. Trained in the various end of life stages, a Doula is able to assist the family with understanding the natural processes, while providing comfort and support.
Did you know some Death Doulas refer to themselves as an end of life doula, soul or death midwife, transition or end of life guide, death coach or thanadoula?
As a member of National End of Life Doula Alliance (NEDA), Courageous Goodbyes follows their naming standards and refer to ourselves as End of Life Doulas. .
